Top 15 Finishes For Radar Tires At Friday Showdown In Charlotte

Traverse City, Mich., April 26, 2014 – Radar Tires drivers had a promising start to the Showdown in Charlotte but podium aspirations were dashed moments into the TORC: The Off Road Championship PRO Light race on Friday night.

But Saturday is another day as Radar Tires is competes in two events this weekend. In addition to competing in the short course TORC: The Off Road Championship’s Husqvarna Showdown in Charlotte, Radar Tires is running in SCORE International’s Imperial Valley 250, in Plaster City, Calif. this weekend. Radar Tires has three PRO Light trucks entered in TORC and three Class 10 buggies in the SCORE event.

Luke Johnson, driver of the No. 14 Project648 Motorsports Nissan Frontier started on the outside pole and ran strong for the first five laps when he was hit and spun. Cam Reimers, driver of the No. 21 SSI Decal/TiLube PRO Light started ninth and was involved in a first lap crash which left his truck smoking and running wounded for the rest of the race. Despite having issues on track Johnson was awarded a 14th place finish and Reimers finished in 11th. In his third TORC race Harris, driver of the No. 22 SSI Decal/TiLube PRO Light, started in 20th in a field of 22 entrants. He ran a clean race and finished 13th, a new career best. Earlier in the day Johnson was fastest in the first PRO Light practice. He continued a quick pace and was sixth quickest in the second practice. During qualifying, Johnson was third in his group of 11.

Per TORC rules, the field was inverted for the race and Johnson started the race on the outside front row. He maintained a top-three run until Lap 5 when he was spun by the competition. He dropped a few positions but was able to maintain a seventh place run until the competition yellow. A few laps later, Johnson was running fifth. On Lap 14, Johnson was spun again and continued at a reduced pace. By Lap 15, Johnson was unable to continue and stopped on track with a failed transmission.

Reimers posted consistent top-10 lap times during both practice sessions. For the race, he started in ninth position and within moments of the green flag, Reimers was involved in a crash. Running at a reduced pace, he completed all but one lap with smoke billowing from his PRO Light truck. At the white flag, the truck stopped on the front straight. Upon post-race team inspection, Reimers’ truck had a damaged oil tank from the Lap 1 crash.

“It was an eventful evening, it started out promising and then everything happened at once,” said Gary Blalock, Radar Tires Motorsports Manager. “The Radar Renegade R5 tires were performing as expected in the practice sessions and qualifying. We were able to show that the Radar R5s could run in the front of the field for the first five laps with Luke. Wrecks happen and Luke and Cam were both in the wrong place at the wrong time. The PRO Light class is aggressive and the guys just were dealt a bad hand on Friday.”

On-track action resumes on Saturday, the second day of Showdown in Charlotte. Fans unable to attend the race at can tune into the Motor Trend YouTube channel for a live broadcast. The race can then be seen on NBC Sports on May 1, at 10 p.m. (ET).
