UK Vows to cut carbon emissions 68% by 2030, faster than any major economy

The UK has vowed to cut carbon emissions faster than any other major economy by 2030. This ambitions move has raised their target of cutting annual carbon emissions from 57% to 68% by 2030, when compared with 1990 levels. The raising of their target is intended to tackle climate change by galvanising other countries to follow suit.

The new targets are based on the advice of the countries’ climate change committee as well as the governments’ statutory advisors who found that the cost for cutting emissions had fallen rapidly in the last few years. The committee said that its 2030 targets sets it on the path of net zero emissions by 2050.

UK has urged other world leaders to bring forward their ambitious plans to cut emissions and set net zero targets.

The targets referred to as NDC or Nationally Determined Contribution will be submitted to the UN as a pledge of UK under the Paris Climate Agreement.
