Luxury car brand Jaguar plans to be an all-electric by 2025

The luxury car brand Jaguar announced that it will go all-electric by 2025 and has outlined a plan where it will phase out internal combustion engines.

In the light of climate change and more stringent CO2 emission targets, the car manufacturer has joined the global race to produce zero-emission vehicles and also plans to launch e-models of its entire line-up by 2030.

Tata Motors, the Indian conglomerate that owns Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) hopes this move will turn around the 86-year-old Jaguar brand’s fortune who has struggled in recent years.

JLR also mentioned that its more profitable brand Land Rover will also be producing six all-electric models over the next five years and the first one will come out in 2024. It is planning to phase out internal combustion engines for this brand also.

As it electrifies its range, JLR mentioned that it will keep all three of its British plants open. “It’s time to re-imagine the next chapter for both brands,” Chief Executive Thierry Bollore said.

This move will require the company to move its car production from Castle Bromwich factory to the city of Birmingham to nearby Solihull.

For the electrification of technology, JLR plans to spend 2.5 billion pounds ($3.5 billion) annually. The company also plans to invest in developing hydrogen fuel cells as it anticipates a future shift in that direction. It also plan to have prototypes using the hydrogen fuel cell on the roads as part of their long-term strategy.

British Transport Secretary Grant Shapp, welcomed this move and called it a huge step for British car manufacturing.

A number of car brands across the world are targeting to go for zero-emission strategies to meet the more stringent CO2 emission targets. Brands such as Bentley Motors, owned by Germany’s Volkswagen aims to be fully electric by 2030. Recently, General Motors also announced that it aims to have a zero-emission line-up by 2035.
