HIMALAYAN ICE CAPS ARE MELTING AT A RAPID RATE

Over the last 40 years, the Himalayan ice sheets have decreased ten times faster than the last 7 centuries, according to new research findings published in the Journal Scientific Reports.

Also known as the third pole, the Himalayan mountains contain the third largest amount of ice sheets next to the Antarctica and the Arctic. The rapidly increasing rate of the ice caps in the Himalayan mountains puts millions in South Asia at risk of water supply issues. The research finds that approximately 15,000 ice sheets from the Himalayas could adversely affect agriculture and put millions of people in South Asia and will continuously contribute to rising sea levels, threatening coastal communities across the world. The research revealed that the Himalayan mountains have lost nearly 40% of the volume over the last couple of hundred years. The researchers estimate that approximately 390 to 586 cubic kilometers of ice sheets have melted which could raise global sea levels by 0.92 to 1.38 millimeters.
